Magazine, returned for a second show in Sydney Sept. 18-19, with approximately 2,500 attendees and more than 50 make-up brands represented. It was a weekend of learning, networking and shopping for the make-up artists and aficionados in attendance.
“It’s so inspiring to hear everyone speak and great to be able to come and stock up on such a variety of products. I’ll definitely come back again,” said make-up artist Rachel Deeley of Western Australia.
Local and international exhibitors spoke directly with artists and many U.S. retailers met their Australian customers for the first time. “We have been involved with all the trade shows for many years. We love seeing the students’ work and creativity—we see it as the future of business and of this industry,” said Susan Kelly, Royal & Langnickel Brushes’ director of sales and marketing.
Speakers and educators included beauty specialists Karen Hopwood, Rae Morris, Koren Zander, Kevin James Bennett, Donna Mee, Emma Hack, Nicole Thompson and Colin Wilson; make-up effects artists Tom Savini, Bobbie Weiner, Gino Acevedo and Brian Sipe; body painters Yolanda Bartram and Maria Mormile and the Australian make-up team from the Emmy-winning miniseries The Pacific . The show’s key make-up and hair designer, Chiara Tripodi, and her team discussed their experiences working on the large-scale Steven Spielberg production, while head prosthetics designer Jason Baird described how his team of 40 artists created 100 prosthetic bodies for the show.

In the character/prosthetic category, Polly McKay of Sydney’s Make-up Effects Group took home the big check.
Australian make-up artist and author Rae Morris discussed how to build a portfolio, get an agent and get shots published, and encouraged aspiring make-up artists to “throw yourself into the industry and train every day of the week. Eat, drink, and breathe make-up. Have passion and determination. Anyone can make it.”
Other notable speakers included Bobbie Weiner (aka Bloody Mary), who demonstrated burn make-up and shared her career history. M.A.C. Cosmetics artist Emma Hack advised aspiring make-up artists and body artists not to wait for a job, but to get a portfolio together by hiring a photographer and practicing body art on a friend.
