Detroit to Tahoe: Speed and beauty on the water

On January 16, 1920 the Eighteenth Amendment, prohibiting the sale, manufacture, or transportation of “intoxicating” liquor, became part of the United States Constitution. Most Canadian provinces adopted similar legislation; but the Liquor Control Act in Ontario, while prohibiting public or hotel drinking, did not prohibit the manufacture and export of liquor.

The thriving 1920s manufacturing city of Detroit – where a sizable segment of the population did not lose its thirst for liquor in spite of the legislated morality of the Eighteenth Amendment – was fortunate to sit right across the river from Windsor, Ontario.

Liquor consigned for shipment to Cuba or Mexico would leave the Windsor docks in the morning, and the boat supposedly headed for Cuba would return in the evening with the morning’s cargo having been smuggled into Detroit for distribution throughout the United States. As illegal trade grew ever larger, the demand for faster boats to transport the cargo grew on the part of the smugglers and the law enforcement trying to catch them. This activity on the Canadian-United States border led, in a roundabout way, to the shores of Carnelian Bay on Lake Tahoe and the upcoming Concours d’ Elegance Wooden Boat Show – influenced by Gar Wood, an early twentieth century American industrialist inventor, and sportsman.

No one could have had a more auspiciously American beginning than Gar Wood. He was the oldest of thirteen children, ten boys and three girls, and born on December 4, 1880 in Mapleton, Iowa. His father had run away from home to become a drummer boy in the Union Army and his eldest child’s full name, Garfield Arthur Wood, was a melding of the names of the candidates on the Republican ticket in that year’s election, James Garfield and Chester Arthur.

The family moved to Minnesota where his father became a ferryboat captain on Lake Osakis 125 miles northwest of Minneapolis. One day when Gar was ten, he was helping crew his father’s ferry, the Manitoba, when it was challenged to an impromptu race by another wood burning ferry on the Lake, the Merry Mann. The Merry Mann pulled abreast of the Manitoba, which was running short on fuel, and started to pass. His father ordered the crew to break up the furniture on the boat to provide fuel for the ferry’s boiler, and the Manitoba prevailed.

In later life Wood recounted this story many times. It was his first intoxicating and long lasting experience with speed on the water. The family moved to Duluth when his dad got a job as a captain on a Great Lakes freighter. Gar got a job in the Duluth Harbor in the government-engineering department where he demonstrated his mechanical ability.

Working principle of hydraulic cylinder|hydraulic cylinder working ...

Hydraulic cylinder according to common structural form, can be  divided into four  types:  1 Piston 2 retractable 3plunger 4 swing, use it to reciprocate, the deceleration device can be removed , and there is no transmission gap, smooth motion, so in a variety of mechanical hydraulic system has been widely used. Hydraulic cylinder output force and the effective area of the piston is proportional to its pressure on both sides; hydraulic cylinder is basically a cylinder and cylinder head, piston and piston rod, seals, cushioning device and exhaust components. Hydraulic cylinder is the hydraulic energy into mechanical energy, and a straight line reciprocating motion (or swing movement) of the hydraulic actuators. Each cylinder is similar to almost all of the original work, and I took it for a manual jack the original work it, Jack is a simple fact of the fuel tank by manual supercharger stalk (hydraulic hand pump) so that the hydraulic oil into the cylinder through a single valve, when the hydraulic oil into the cylinder causes the valve because the individual can not back back, to force the cylinder rod up, and then continue to work to make hydraulic oil into the hydraulic cylinder, and thus constantly on the rise, to drop open when the hydraulic valve, hydraulic oil back to tank. This is the simplest of the original work, and others are based on the improvement of this, because of the time I say this most simple of. Hydraulic cylinder from the structure can be divided into piston cylinder \ swing-cylinder piston-cylinder and cylinder from the structure can be divided into piston cylinder \ film cylinder \ telescopic cylinder, hydraulic cylinder of the working principle is: I talked about how it works first it’s the basic five components, 1 – cylinder and cylinder head 2– piston and piston rod 3 – sealing device 4 – buffer device 5 – exhaust device.
