Roy Exum: Gail's Stinky Column

Gail Kerr is a talented news columnist for the Nashville Tennessean and in Sunday’s newspaper she wrote a column with the headline: “Nashville Can Now Stick Its Nose Up At Chattanooga.” Gail informed her readers that “Nashville has long had a jealous play-cousin relationship with our nearby neighbor Chattanooga.”

Boy, that’s news to me. I’ve hundreds of friends in Nashville. Not long ago I went to Vanderbilt to get my eye fixed and the thriving city sure does have more restaurants and better music than Chattanooga does. I never dreamed there was a rub until the popular Nashville columnist told why.

“Chattanooga redeveloped its riverfront into a hip destination while we sat on our hands. It built a nifty aquarium years before we redid the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Adventure Science Center and constructed a swanky symphony hall. It nailed Volkswagen. We lost Nissan to Williamson County.

“Who has the last laugh now? We could put out a new bumper sticker: Music City – WE. DON’T. STINK.”

Oh for heaven’s sake. It seems Gail has gotten a whiff of an unfortunate story that was written by Jamie Kitman after he was invited to see the new VW Passat and, while he was in Chattanooga, the Automobile Magazine journalist got carried away by some foul odors he encountered downtown.

Gail had a field day with the “non-story,” pointing out Chattanooga’s ancient sewer system is combined with the stormwater system and, when it is uncommonly hot and dry in the summer, there is what the sharp-nosed New York writer classified as a “world-class pong” odor.

To begin with, I adore Nashville but I assure you I could take the misguided columnist to a back street off Printer’s Alley or Second Avenue and give her a chance to smell its seedy side. The same goes for New York City, especially when it’s cold and the steam coming from the sidewalk grates will make you postpone lunch.

Sadly, the Nashville columnist, who I delight in reading often, even sucked some rube named Butch Spyridon into her mirth and Butch, a fitting name for Nashville’s Convention and Visitors Bureau president, immediately uncorked a snide, “Since we are upwind from Chattanooga, we think they make a great half-day trip.”

Gail went on to point out, “In what has to be any city’s most embarrassing budget line ever, (Chattanooga) actually drops large deodorant blocks into manholes.
