Fasig-Tipton auctions tough to handicap

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Hard times for horse racing and a tough economy could mean fewer yearlings sold at this summer's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale, but changes to New York's racing model should benefit future sales, company officials say.

Kentucky-based Fasig-Tipton will hold its 91st annual select thoroughbred auction Monday and Tuesday at the Humphrey S. Finney Sales Pavilion .

The Blood-Horse magazine 's MarketWatch recently called the annual horse auction on East Avenue the leading North American yearling sale for Grade 1 stakes winners, for graded stakes winners and for stakes winners by percentage of horses sold.

But this year's sale catalog lists 160 horses, 21 percent fewer than last year when 202 were on the auction block. Fasig-Tipton officials blame the closing of race tracks around the country and fewer owners investing in the industry, which has seen the number of foals decline nationwide in recent years.

Falling sales numbers in Saratoga the last few years reflect a tighter market, in which buyers don't have the same amount of discretionary money to spend on racehorses. The 2011 catalog reflects that trend.

"It's among the lowest we've offered," Fasig-Tipton spokesman Terence Collier said in a recent interview. "It will be a test of the market."

Yearling sales have sagged in recent years even at Saratoga -- called the "boutique" of horse auctions. In 2010, 118 yearlings sold for $32.5 million, a big drop from 2009, when 160 sold for $52.5 million. Collier would not predict where he thought prices might land this summer.

But he did have some good news.

Under state law, substantial amounts of money from video lottery terminals at Aqueduct Race Track, which are expected to start operating in September or October, will go toward the New York Racing Association, its race tracks and race purses and breeders. The rippling impact in the sales rings should be seen in the coming years, Collier said.

"There's more than light at end of the tunnel, there's actual reality," he said. "It bodes exceptionally well for racing."

Fasig-Tipton's New York-bred Preferred sale, to be held Aug. 13 and 14 this year in the East Avenue pavilion, is already seeing a bump. More than 200 state-bred yearlings are listed for sale this year, compared to 175 in last summer's sale, Collier said.

In 2010, the New York-bred auctions sold 94 horses for $3.68 million, significantly less than the 107 that sold for $4.35 million in 2009.
