Lorain official alleges company is watering lawns with stolen water
Acting Water Department Superintendent Dennis Pihlblad believes a landscape company doing work for Lorain City Schools, Down to Earth Landscaping, is stealing water from city fire hydrants. Pihlblad filed a police report on Monday saying he suspects the landscape company of causing more than $3,500 worth of damages to city water lines by the opening and closing of the hydrants too fast. He estimated the damages to repair recent water main breaks in areas where landscapers were stealing water amounts to more than $10,000, the report stated. Pihlblad called police Tuesday to the scene of a water leak at the intersection of West Fifth Street and Hamilton Avenue and had them talk to a witness who saw a truck filling its tanks from a fire hydrant. About five minutes later, there was a water leak in the roadway, according to the report. The witness did not remember the name of the company written on the side of the truck, but remembers seeing the word “landscaping” on the door and the employees were wearing bright yellow shirts, the report stated. The department has been testing hydrants for the past month and with the water main breaks, it doesn’t’ make their job any easier. “There have been difficulties in testing the hydrants with all of the main breaks,” he said. Once the water main is repaired the fire department then has to go back out and test the hydrants, even if they had already previously tested the hydrant and the line.
