If someone were to picture former Golden Gloves boxer Andy Rivera stepping into the ring in his ‘40s, after over a decade of super-sizing it at Taco Bell, the typical reaction in New Mexico would be laughter.
“Fat chance of that happening,” might be the average remark.
“Fat,” however, no longer factors into the equation for the returning boxer who’s found peace in his sport after dropping more than 100 pounds.
Once upon a time, the once-chubby Albuquerque heavyweight who boxed his way to the state Golden Gloves, then ate his way from fitness to fatness when he gave up participating in the sport in 2000, to reporting on it. Getting his start with NewMexicoBoxing.com, Rivera later branched out on his own to cover local boxing on his own website, NewMexicoSportsNews.com. After a decade of telling it like it is – racking up as many friends as he did enemies – Rivera woke up one morning, utterly disgusted with himself.
“The turning point was about 18 months ago,” recalls Rivera. “I was putting on pajamas I’d gotten from Wal-Mart – double XL – or trying Since his mother passed away, Rivera’s weight had risen – from 280 to a career high of 333.
“Johnny Tapia’s demon might be drugs, and Danny Romero battles drinking,” says Rivera. “But I have food.
“I was literally, ‘Dead Man Walking.’ I was depressed. I’d drive across town late at night, just to go to Taco Cabana or Taco Bell. I didn’t care about life and felt lost. I had built a gym in my house – but what good is a treadmill and a treadmill when you didn’t feel like doing it? I felt like Butterbean.”
And then Rivera got a crazy idea – he’d try getting in shape. Encouraged by a close friend, Maria Bentancourt, and her son, Yamel, Rivera started to walk.
“I did a little more each day,” he says. “I bought a digital scale. Slowly, the weight went down . . . I walked – then I ran. And I started to shadow box.”
By last October, Rivera was down to 250 – just ten pounds over his last fighting weight, in 1998, but still not good enough. He started training at the TUFF Gym in the South Valley.
