Holocaust survivor recalls four years in hell
Ziffer, a biblical scholar, author, and retired Mars Hill College professor, shared his experiences of the Holocaust with a packed house at the Ashe County Library Wednesday afternoon. As part of the library’s reading of Elie Wiesel’s “Night”, a bedrock of Holocaust literature, Ziffer shared his own tale that closely parallels Wiesel’s powerful memoir. Ziffer quickly found that hope misplaced, as the Nazi SS set up their headquarters in the downstairs apartment of Ziffer’s home. The SS - the organization responsible for numerous crimes against humanity during the leadup to, and during, the Second World War - would kick and spit on Ziffer and his sister as they tried to make their way upstairs after school. After a week, he and his family were evicted and forced into the ghetto at the edge of town. The next four years of his life was an endless series of slave camps, where the able-bodied Ziffer wasted away to less than 80 pounds. “We survived on three ‘meals’ a day,” said Ziffer. “They gave us black ‘coffee’ in the morning, but it was some other bitter substitute for coffee. At lunch, we would receive lukewarm soup that had a few potato and beet peels floating on top. At night, we usually received 11 or 12 ounces of heavy bread. That was it.” Ziffer became one of 300,000 European Jews who brought their stories to the United States after the war; he settled in Nashville, Tenn., in 1949. With courage befitting a man who had stared down death, Ziffer finished high school in less than a year, and later graduated with a degree in engineering from Vanderbilt University. He went on to earn advanced degrees in theology, and shared his experiences with students at Mars Hill College. Ziffer married and has six children and 12 grandchildren.
