Write Your Own Column: ; Free class helps seniors master and enjoy computers ...
(Charleston Gazette, The (WV) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) One of your guest columnists from Ohio recently shared her frustration with attempting to connect her computer to an Internet service provider ("It's senior vs. the computer"). Unfortunately, other than knowing where the power button was located, she had no real idea of how to operate the computer. For the past four years it has been my privilege and honor to teach "An Introduction to Personal Computers" to senior citizens. The class is free and is open to any Kanawha County resident over 60. The class lasts for six weeks and meets from 10 a.m. to noon on Mondays and Thursdays. The class size is small enough (eight to 10 students) that everyone receives individual attention. The learning environment is laid-back and very informal. We also teach: * How to use search engines; * Buying and selling online; * How to stream music and video to your computer; * How to change wallpaper; * How to make Skype video calls; * The etiquette of electronic communication; * How to protect your computer; * How to locate family, friends and neighbors whom you have not seen for many years; * Web-based brain exercises designed to improve cognitive functioning; and * How to send and receive email and attachments. Most of the seniors who enroll in this class have been very successful in their own careers but have been left behind by the relentless technological advances of the 21st century. They represent all walks of life: doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers, business owners, legislators and homemakers. Their common denominator is the desire not to be left behind or feel marginalized by younger people who have acquired computer skills almost intuitively. We find that some of our most successful students are in their 80s and 90s.Ohio Free Internet - News
