A line of pharmaceutical packaging manufacturer is a challenge for vision systems due to the need to select the correct label among the many alternatives to meet the different languages ​​and regulatory requirements worldwide. The packaging line used previously in the application was a linear machine with hot patch pressure sensitive printing and a vision system's image comparison. The vision system had difficulty matching ideal for real images, which leads to a high rate of false rejection rate. This high rate of false rejection rate has played a major role in the overall line efficiency equipment (OEE; see definition below the text). The vision system also took a considerable period of time to set up new labels.

The pharmaceutical manufacturer began looking for alternatives to improve the line.The company has developed a rotary labeling machine using thermal transfer printing providing greater availability and performance. To help improve the vision system, the company began working with Wilfredo Jimenez and Jesus Otero WJ Automation & Integration Corp. (WJAI, San Juan, Puerto Rico).

When the pharmaceutical manufacturer has installed a new packaging line, the company implemented In-Sight 5100 and 5600 vision systems from Cognex (Natick, MA, USA), which use optical character recognition / verification of optical (OCR / OCV) to read characters on the label and compare them with the correct sequence. This approach reduces the false rejection rate of 0.5%, contributing substantially, improving first-pass yield (quality) and therefore the OEE of 200%.

"When I got involved in the project, the company was working with a machine builder for the design of rotating machines two labels," says Jimenez. "They needed to inspect all aspects of a label very complex, with nearly 100% accuracy. " The initial challenge was to determine the vision system can accurately identify and test many different labels.
