Here's another Grimm tale, a true one, about Clyde and Betsey Grimm.

A couple months ago, Clyde opened up the Saturday edition of The Capital to one of his favorite sections: Home of the Week. He was in for a shock. There, in living color, was a house in the Harbor Hills section of Davidsonville that was very familiar to him. Years before, he had designed it and oversaw its construction. Though the Grimms sold it in 2003, Clyde was delighted to see its new owners were enjoying it as much as he and his wife Betsey had years before.

He emailed me to nominate the current Grimm residence, located in a senior living community in Crofton, for Home of the Week.

Clyde is the retired co-founder of the architectural firm, Grimm & Parker, in Prince Georges County. The company currently has more than 75 employees. It has two offices on either side of the Capitol Beltway: one in Virginia, one in Maryland. During his first career, Clyde, a 1950 graduate of Catholic University, designed numerous schools throughout the region, the Prince Georges County Administration Building in Upper Marlboro and the Riverdale Baptist Church, which seats 2,500 congregants. After his first retirement, he was a successful Realtor with Champion Realty for a decade. That was followed by five years with Re-Max before he retired again.

"I loved the old house," said Clyde, "but I thought it was time we had everything on the main floor. The other house has seven levels, this one has three. We also scaled back from having to care for an acre, to a property that is a fraction of that."

As a Realtor, Clyde traveled the highways and byways of Anne Arundel County quite a bit. When he heard a small neighborhood for folks 55 and older would be built in Crofton, he and Betsey ventured over to take a look. "Betsey selected this site before the house was built. We were the first owners," said Clyde. "It's the best site in the community. We have a view of the woods."

"And great neighbors," added Betsey. "There are 62 houses here. It's like our own private community. Everyone likes everyone."

The couple likes the trails that wind through the community and the wildlife that swoops, scurries or hops across their backyard and patio. "We see deer, baby bunnies and the occasional fox," Betsey said. "Lots of birds, too."

Directly behind their house, instead of another house, lies a rainwater containment pond surrounded by rustic, split-rail fencing. Beyond the pond is a thick, verdant fringe of woodlands. Clyde designed the couple's paving stone patio overlooking the pond. It features a low retaining stone wall on one side and, at the rear, a gently sloping berm covered with plantings. A small brick-red footbridge and a stone pathway enables the Grimms, their two sons David and Rick and their wives, their five grandchildren and one 16-month-old great-grandchild access over a bed of dry river stones to the other side of the berm. There, a stone bench under a small shade tree can be shared with a statue of a seated cherub.

Clyde's pride and joy rests on the floor, a wood and cast iron marvel. It is the first school desk he ever sat at when he attended Eastern School in New Philadelphia, Ohio in the 1930s. "Some friends got it for me when the schoolhouse was demolished,"
