Matthews, originally from Parry Sound, spent his youth shining shoes on James Street, working as a bell hop at the Belvedere Heights Hotel and playing hockey, among other sports. After graduating from Parry Sound High School, Matthews pursued an education at Ryerson University and eventually accepted a hockey scholarship with Clarkson College of Technology in New York. Matthews and his wife Judy Treeter made their home in Binghamton where Matthews introduced the Binghamton Broome Dusters into the North American Hockey League, which he helped to create, in 1973. Intent on creating a team that meshed well with the community, Matthews put in extra effort to familiarize himself with players, coaches and fans. A handful of Parry Sounders were recruited for the new team, including Roddy Bloomfield and Neil Clairmont as players, and Ron Orr as manager. According to media reports, from 1973 to 1980 the team averaged 4,270 spectators in the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
