Weekend Warrior: Softball at the shore!
Take any more sunshine.The purpose of the trip was to play in the Philadelphia Sport and Social Club's Shore Softball Classic, which we've done every year since the tournament started in 2007. So, we were out there roasting under the giant fireball of a sun from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, and to be quite honest, I was a little bit relieved that we didn't advance past the first playoff round and defend our 2010 championship (we went 1-2, losing those two games by a combined three runs).
I would probably have passed out on the field if I had to play one more inning.
The best thing about playing softball in extreme heat is that you limber up pretty quickly and can't feel all the aches in your muscles and joints. You can even dive for balls in the outfield and do your patented forward-roll finish (a thing of beauty, if you ask me) without feeling so much as a twinge in your injured neck!
The worst thing is that you wake up the next morning, after sleeping near a blasting air conditioner, feeling extra when I'm playing sports on a 100-plus-degree summer day.
Of course, the pain was/is worth it. My teammates are a bunch of super-fun people who (I think) continue to like me, even though I got only two hits in three games and TWICE stranded runners on third base -- one would have been the tying run.
I wish I could blame my crappy hitting on the heat, but we're not about making excuses here.
