Harness Racing Returns to the Wayne County Fairgrounds
The thunder of hoofbeats returned to the Dyberry Oval this weekend.
Despite oppressive heat and humidity, harness racing fans were treated to full cards of Pennsylania Sire Stakes races Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
All told, 21 heats were run in both trotting and pacing categories...much to the delight of small, but enthusiastic crowds.
“I’m very happy with how everything went,” longtime Wayne County Fairgrounds race secretary and track announcer Jeff Firmstone told TWI Sports . “I think the turnout was pretty impressive. We had some of the top fair horses, trotter and pacers, in the whole state here.”
As has been the case the past three summers, the Honesdale Area Jaycees sponsored this event, which acts as a fitting prelude to the Wayne County Fair.
“The Jaycees always do a nice job,” Firmstone said. “Because of all their hard work, we have PA’s best harness racers here twice a year instead of just once.”
The 149th Annual Wayne County Fair is slated to begin on Friday, August 5th. There will be three days of harness racing at this year’s fair: Tuesday (post time 2:00 p.m.), Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) and Thursday (12:00 p.m.)
On the Track To the surprise of no one, Roger Hammer fared well on Day One of this weekend’s event.
The PA Fair Circuit’s most famous driver and winner of the 2005 Hambletonian, Hammer cruised to a pair of wins on Saturday.
Roger drove “Twilight Artist” to victory in Heat Two, a mile pace open to 3-year-old colts. He followed that up by guiding “Caramel Chinno” to the winner’s circle in a filly pace.
David Brickell also earned a driving double, winning two of Saturday’s first four heats. Brickell, who hails from Smicksburg, claimed his first win in the bike behind “Evening Shadows.” He added a second two heats later, thanks to a solid wire-to-wire effort from “DVC Hop-n-Attitude.
Without question, however Saturday’s biggest ac-complishment via Winston Limeweaver. A veteran driver from Delaware, Limeweaver posted the 1,600th win of his storied career.
“Winston is an old school horsman,” Firmstone said with a smile. “He doesn’t want anyone making a fuss over him. But, 1,600 wins is really a pretty big deal.”
Other winners on Saturday afternoon included: Todd Schadel, Christopher Shaw, Bryce Truitt, Wade Ross and Lynn Fry.

We're not anxious for him to get home and pass more outlandish laws which violate the Constitution. Haslam passes a slew of laws belittling and overturning aspects of Freedom of Speech in our state but then takes a trip to show his support to our spreading of Democracy. I think Billy Boy is a little confused in his motivations and stance on things. .
