Treading the boards
Brian McIntosh is used to striding across opera stages around the world. His route to work often involved international flights. He still uses the side door, but now it's to his garage, not the stage. The renowned bass is using his hands more than his vocal chords in his new career.
When you cross the deck and enter his workplace, the sweet smell of freshly cut wood greets you. A table saw, drill press, drum sander, belt and disc sander, router table, miter box, planes and stacks of wood set the stage for McIntosh's new artistry: one-of-a-kind furniture.
"I do a lot of hand work, the way it used to be done," McIntosh said. "I use traditional mortise and tenon joinery, hand-cut dovetails and shellac and wax finishes. By doing it the old-fashioned way, it's more like it was 100 years ago."
As his singing took him around the world, his furniture making followed. His pieces can be found in Canada and Europe, including dining and coffee tables, beds, cabinets, book shelves, stools, outdoor furniture, clocks and benches.
Like his voice, his woodworking skills were honed from an early age. His father was a carpenter, and his great-granduncle a cabinetmaker. He inherited the latter's toolbox, full of specialized instruments, each stamped with his name, James Crerar.
McIntosh followed his love of singing first: to the University of Western Ontario then to Germany where he studied with Theo Lindenbaum.
At the same time, he developed his woodworking skills, apprenticing in London at Pre-Confederation Furniture, in Germany at Holzwerkstatt Bunte. Poring over German woodworking magazines with a dictionary in one hand, he learned the language.
He has sung recitals for intimate audiences, operas in Europe and North America, including Verdi's Aida for a crowd of 50,000 in Toronto's SkyDome (now Rogers Centre).
"It was an exciting feeling. The big events always stand out for me. I also remember the final act of Die Meistersinger with the Canadian Opera Co. (COC) in Toronto. It was my first performance in the O'Keefe Centre (Sony Centre for the Performing Arts) with the COC and I think there were 250 people on stage with soloists, chorus and extras."
McIntosh has exchanged the roar of the crowds for the hum of the motor on his table saw, although if the Met calls tomorrow, you can be sure he'll be on an airplane again.
Examples of his talent adorn his Arts and Crafts-style home. A cabinet he built to house a beer stein collection marries McIntosh's passions for cabinetry and opera.
