“We purchased a mid-18th century carved mahogany library chair for a huge amount of money. It cost way more than expected and way more than I wanted to pay, but I thought we had the matching chair to it in our warehouse in London.
Tom Baldrige: Lessons from a Chair School
Life Lessons. They come in all shapes and sizes. They can be borne over years of experience; they can occur in an instant; or they can show themselves during some rare, but purposeful time of reflection.
I recently received a dose of “life lessons” thanks to an amazing program offered by the Lancaster County Community Foundation. I was a Baldwin Fellow. The year-long program is a true gift to this community, in general, and to our local non-profit leaders, in specific. It’s geared to help us renew, refocus and revitalize on both a personal and professional level. In this regard, it is extremely fitting that the program is named for John Baldwin, a long-time Community Foundation Board member and all-around awesome individual that has contributed to the Lancaster community in a host of ways. It was an honor to be associated with a program that bears his name.
For me the experience was about three things: 1. Sharing a journey of challenges, successes and learning with five other non-profit leaders; 2. Taking advantage of the program’s funding to secure a “life coach” in Rob Skacel of TrueEdge Performance Solutions; and, 3. Building a chair.
While Number 1 and 2 above were great and would have made the program worthwhile in their own right, the unexpected life lesson came in the building of a chair.
The plan was to build this chair at a “chair camp” in Jefferson, Ohio, where I joined three other wannabe-woodworkers
to learn the craft. We started on a Monday morning by picking out our “log” and spent the rest of the week turning that log into our chair. By Saturday afternoon, I was headed back to Lancaster with a new chair carefully placed in the back of my Ford Escape. Sounds relaxing, huh?
Trust me, there’s something about trying to build a hand-crafted Windsor chair, in a week, with no other distractions, not to mention no discernible skill in chair-making, that made this an experience ripe for learning. It was a week that I was completely out of my comfort zone and –without question—the “dumbest kid in the class.” Yet, it was a week that yielded both a pretty darn good-looking chair AND a host of meaningful life lessons.
You can read more of the specifics about my experience in my April column in B2B Magazine: Rung Out
While the week at “chair camp” was certainly the most unique aspect of my Baldwin Fellowship experience, it was matched for meaning and learning by the coaching and camaraderie I gained through the rest of my involvement in the program.
