The origins of Maryland's counties, names

Although intended as a sanctuary for Roman Catholics in the New World, Maryland quickly became a thriving community.

George Calvert, first Lord Baltimore, served as a secretary of state for King James I and was given the title to Avalon, a piece of land in Newfoundland, as a reward for his service. Calvert later also asked the king's son, Charles I, for a title to the land that would ultimately become Maryland.

When George Calvert drew up the charter, he left the space for the name blank, giving Charles I the honor of choosing what to call it. The king ultimately settled on "Terra Maria," and the territory became "Mary's Land," in honor of Queen Henrietta Mary.

George Calvert died before the charter was finished and his son Cecil became the founder of Maryland.

Many of Maryland's counties' names stem from the names of members and associates of the Calvert family.

Allegany

Allegany County was formed from part of Washington County in 1789. The name comes from the native American word "oolikhanna," meaning "beautiful stream."

Anne Arundel

Anne Arundel was the wife of Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore, who founded the state of Maryland. Established in 1650, Anne Arundel includes Annapolis, the state capital.

Baltimore and Baltimore County

Formed in 1660 from part of Anne Arundel County, Baltimore County was named for the Calvert family's barony in Ireland. Although Baltimore's port was used to transport Maryland tobacco since early in the state's existence, the city didn't officially separate from Baltimore County until 1851.

Calvert

Calvert County was founded in 1654, although it was originally called Patuxent County. In 1658, it was rechristened using the family name of Maryland founder Cecil Calvert, second Lord Baltimore.

Caroline

Caroline County was formed in 1773 from parts of Dorchester and Queen Anne's counties. Caroline Eden was the wife of Robert Eden, the last colonial governor of Maryland. Caroline Eden was also the daughter of Charles Calvert, the fifth Lord Baltimore, and the sister of Frederick Calvert, sixth Lord Baltimore.

Carroll

Carroll County was created in 1837 from parts of Frederick and Baltimore counties. It was named after Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the last living signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Tequila, this question was not meant for you. It was meant to save our pro-palestinian friends . They have been repeating the story about how they are “the native Palestinians” so many times that they started to believe it themselves. So, I´ve decided to remind them about their true origin. Otherwise they could have gone nuts on the how they are “the native inhabitants of Palestine”.

There is no such thing as “race” Mr. Geneticist…Majority of Palestinian surnames showcase profession, e.g. Addabbagh yidbigh leather / Sarraj yisrij domesticated animals / haddad yhid metal / Al not “el”masry (Gazzan most probably) trades with Egyptians like prophet Joseph peace is upon him did. Another note, it is very likely there are non Palestinian Arabs to be found amongst the Palestinians because of borders since majority of Muslims and Christians are not ethnocentric like many Zionists are.

Now to ice my cake: “boats”. Why? Everyone here knows the origins of the local Arab communities. For example, the Hebron Arabs migrated from Syria, while most of the Arab population along Israel’s coastal plains is of Egyptian origin.

Over the centuries, there were several waves of Arabs passing through Israel, but, interestingly, very few of them actually settled here until the Jewish return to the Land intensified in the mid 1800s. The greatest numbers of Arabs began to stay –obviously, for economic reasons– during the British Mandate period and through the establishment of the State of Israel. Among those who migrated were Egyptian peasants, Trans-Jordanian tribes, Kurds, Circassians, and Southern Syrians.

most palestinians do not hold surnames like that, but the one’s that do hold surnames like that doesnt actually mean they are from those places. what kind of world have u been living in? it is extremely common for people to migrate to different places. but that doesnt mean all their descendents are of the same ethnicity as them. they intermarry if you hadnt noticed. i have an american friend who has the surname Cohen but she is not jewish herself. obviously she must have had an ancestor who was a jew and broke the jewish tradition, married a gentile and raised gentile children. that is not abnormal at all. if we trace her family tree im sure she is like 1% jewish or something. in fact there is even a famous english rugby player called ben cohen who is not jewish, but does that surname mean anything?
