How often do you get wax in your carpet? Well unless you own a candle shop or just really love ambient lighting it probably doesn’t happen that often. And because it doesn’t happen that often when it does occur most of us are at a loss. So here are some tips on how to remove wax from your carpet should you ever have the misfortune of having to deal with it.
The most important thing to keep in mind about wax is that it does dry very quickly. If you’ve ever dripped candle wax on anything you know that it almost dries instantly. Usually the outer layer will start to harden first, leaving a gooey center. For this reason alone you must act immediately for the most effective removal. As with all other stains, the faster you treat it, the better chance you have of getting it out completely.
The first thing you want to try is pouring some warm water over the wax in an attempt to keep it soft and malleable. If you own a shop vac you will want to use it to extract as much of the wax and warm water as possible. If you’re lucky the wax stayed soft due to the water and a good portion of it got extracted. This isn’t always the case though.
Now you want to make sure the remaining wax is completely dry before proceeding. To speed up the process you can put ice cubes in a Ziploc bag and place it on top of the wax. Next you want to try removing as much of the wax as you can with a blunt object such as a butter knife. You don’t want to scrape as much as break the wax into smaller pieces and off of the carpet fibers. Be gentle. You don’t want to damage any of the fibers in this process. Extract what you can with the shop vac.
Once you’ve removed all the wax that you can you can move on to the next step. This one requires an iron and a wet towel or grocery bag. The idea is to attempt a transfer of the remaining wax from the carpet onto the bag or towel. What you want to do is place the bag over the wax. Using the iron on a low setting you basically iron the area. It is important to keep the iron moving. You don’t want to burn anything by keeping it in one spot for too long.
When the bag begins to collect the wax you need to swap it out for a new one so that you aren’t just transferring the wax back into the carpet. Repeat this step as many times as necessary until all the wax has been removed.
Remember to test a small area first. Different carpets have different melting points. You wouldn’t want to find out yours is lower than you thought.
