Mark Rutledge: Bloodthirsty spiders
My wife and I have been on a healthy-breakfast kick for quite some time. We've been having oatmeal for so long, in fact, that a spider took up residence in the lone box of Pop-Tarts left in the cupboard.
It was one of those black, jumping spiders. (They jump like that so they can go for the jugular.)
The little booger sprang right onto my hand as I went to remove one of the preservative-packed pastries.
“EEEYE! SPIDER!” I exclaimed, tossing the box and spider across the kitchen.
“Want me to come in there and kill it for you?” Sharon asked from the den.
“I've got it,” I said, shoe raised.
“Screaming like a little girl,” she further teased, “won't scare it to death.”
Refuse to kill one spider and some women will never let you forget it.
When Sharon and I were dating, she lived in a trailer on her brother's farm. Spiders and field mice were frequent visitors. Once as a brown spider made a run for it across the particleboard countertop, she asked me to kill it and I balked.
“I'm not wearing any shoes,” I said, backing away.
“Oh, for heaven's sake,” she huffed. And with the sure overhand slam of a 6-foot volleyball player, she spiked said spider with her bare serving palm.
“What a woman!” I marveled.
“My thoughts exactly,” she snarled disgustedly.
Like Johnny Carson to Ed McMahon, I playfully jumped into her arms and said, “Marry me!”
When Sharon scoffed at the attack of the killer Pop-Tart spider, I admitted to being a bit jittery over a recent spider incident at work.
I was at my desk in the newsroom, minding my own business, when a large, black object in my peripheral vision began slowly descending from the ceiling over the desk directly in front of me. Closer inspection revealed it to be the fattest, blackest black widow spider I've ever seen, its shiny red hourglass glowing deadly.
I could almost hear Vincent Price's chilling description of the black widow's venomous ways on that old Alice Cooper song.
With several newsroom colleagues gathered around, I bravely trapped the wicked specimen in a clear plastic container and delivered it to our fearless executive editor, Al Clark.
An exterminator was dispatched to the scene and located a teeming nest of young black widows above the ceiling over my desk. Nice.

When a jumping spider approaches, the fly waves its wings much the way it does to seduce female peacock flies. But the spider is fooled by the wing display and pattern, mistaking it for a territorial display of another jumping spider.

Spiders in Pursuit of Prey
These spider photos are some shots taken in the summer of 2008 in Central Ohio. My favorite shot is the black jumping spider (with hairy white fangs that look like a giant bushy mustache) stalking the leafhopper . Fortunately for the leafhopper, the spider did not find him. However, the other jumping spider was more successful—he caught an ant in his pursuit for lunch.
