Rebecca Black Joins Katy Perry Onstage at LA Show

Katy Perry has never been apologetic about her brand of sugary sweet pop. From the cherry Chapstick line in her breakout hit “I Kissed a Girl” to the confectionary avalanche of her “California Gurls” video, which features the singer butt naked in a cloud of cotton candy and shooting whipped cream out of peppermint candy-inspired breasts, the calorie count on a Katy Perry single spikes to the many thousands -- in the best way.

You could say the same of her six-month California Dreams world tour, which hit Perry’s adopted hometown on Friday for the first of three sold out nights at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theater (she returns to the Staples Center across the street in November). And judging by her audience, of whom at least half looked under the age of 12, the kid-in-a-candy-store theme was entirely appropriate since that’s exactly what it felt like to peer upon Perry’s pastel-colored stage set, which included three pink cloud-shaped video screens, gigantic lollipops, rainbow-colored stairs and candy cane accents.

It’s all part of an elaborate fantasy sequence that she’s cooked up, explained (somewhat) by a video that gives nods to The Wizard of Oz and airs intermittently throughout the show. And if that’s not enough visual stimuli, Perry also provides a troupe of dancers -- eight in total -- and costumes that include a human slot machine (for “Waking Up in Vegas”) and a giant purple cat (for a cover of Whitney Houston ’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”).

But it’s her own wardrobe changes -- more than a dozen during the nearly two-hour show -- that take the, er, cake. From the lime-green casino-ready gown of “Waking Up in Vegas” to the sexy black catwoman suit Perry wears during “Circle the Drain,” the glittery silver wrap of “Pearl” to the Hershey’s Kiss-themed bikini of “California Gurls” and the candy button dress of the closing number, every piece of fabric is choreographed to tell a story, but not to distract from the vocals, as seems to be the case with so many pop superstars whose voices either don’t translate to a live setting or simply aren’t strong enough.

Neither was the case for Katy Perry, who proved her range with a jazzy version of “I Kissed a Girl” and ballads such as “Not Like The Movies” and “Thinking of You,” the latter which she performed from a cloud-like podium that trollies above the crowd. She also silenced any potential naysayers with pitch-perfect delivery of her singles, opener “Teenage Dream,” “E.T.,” “Hot N Cold” and the show’s final number, “Firework.” Sure, she’s sung these songs a zillion times, but you wouldn’t know it from the enthusiasm Perry puts out, the sign of a true pro.

Before you hit the Ventura County Fair, dig into the tasy history of fair-food

They'd patented the first electric machine for spinning sugar into edible threads in 1899. Others cite Thomas Patton for obtaining a patent in 1900 for a cotton candy machine that used a rotating plate to spin long sugar threads with a fork;

Cotton Candy: Choosing the Right Machine – Home Theater Express

– That old-time classic treat. Its history in America can be traced back to the historical 1904 World’s Fair, but the history of cotton candy may go back even further throughout the world.

The concept behind making cotton candy isn’t rocket science. In fact, cotton candy floss is nothing more than granulated sugar that’s colored and flavored. It comes in a variety of flavors such as: strawberry . That’s the one most everyone associates with cotton candy color, taste and smell. If you have the luxury of owning two or more cotton candy makers, you may even mix up different flavors to make a two or three-colored combination.

While it’s possible to make this confectionary delight at home with things you find in the kitchen, this can get a little messy.

Cotton candy machines make the experience much easier by using a heated spinner head that forces melting sugar through tiny holes – a job you would do by the tiresome task of hand whisking otherwise. Cotton candy machines rely on centrifugal force to press the melted sugar through the holes and into a large bowl called a floss pan . In this process, the sugar amazingly transforms into a fluffy sugar that builds up on the inside wall of the bowl. When enough of the fluff accumulates, it’s time to twirl a floss stick around the inside of the bowl. In seconds, you have that classic treat!

Cotton candy makers come in two basic classes: entry-level . Prices typically start at around $50 for an entry level machine, while commercial-level machines generally start at around $1000.

Entry Level Cotton Candy Makers:

Within the entry-level category you have a rather wide range of machines and prices – some priced up towards $500.

So why such a large price range for an entry-level cotton candy machine?

It really comes down to motor capability and output per minute. Lower priced machines (between $50 and $100), may produce smaller and fewer servings per minute (generally 1 or 2 servings per minute).  This is adequate for the occasional treat for kids and grandkids. Whereas, higher priced entry-level machines might include features like a heavy duty motor and cool-running heat controls. These machines often produce 2 to 4 larger servings per minute. Higher end entry-level machines (between $250 and $500) are fantastic for home use, particularly if you’re having a party or event. *However, these machines generally are not adequate for commercial use.
