Airline news roundup
RYANAIR has become the first European airline to carry more than 8million passengers in one month.
The budget airline, which carried 8.1m passengers in July, said its record growth was thanks to passengers switching from 'high fare, fuel surcharging flag carriers, such as Aer Lingus, Air France, BA and Lufthansa'.
Ryanair's Stephen McNamara said: "Ryanair's record 8m July traffic means Ryanair has carried more passengers in the month of July than Aer Lingus will carry on its short-haul network in all of 2011."
DELTA AIR LINES has announced a new deal to become the official airline of the Whitney Museum, New York's iconic art and cultural hub.
The Whitney is the newest addition - and first in the arts category - to Delta's extensive sponsorship portfolio in New York, which includes Madison Square Garden, The James Beard Foundation, 9/11 Memorial Fund, Food Bank for New York City, the New York Yankees and the New York Mets.
The partnership aligns Delta with the world's foremost collection of contemporary American art.
LUFTHANSA GROUP has returned to profit during the first six months of 2011, despite catastrophes in Japan and political unrest in North Africa.
The group posted an operating profit of three million euros for the first six months of 2011 - 174m euros above the previous year's figure.
A spokesman said: "The group was thus able to record a positive operating result despite the result being burdened by losses in the lower triple-digit millions as a result of the catastrophes in Japan and political unrest in North Africa.
"Lufthansa remains among the profitable airlines in the world even after six months of strong headwinds. All of our business segments are continuing to work hard to extend the gap to our competitors."
SWISS is set to introduce an Optional Payment Charge (OPC) across all distribution channels for payments made with credit card.
The charge, effective from November 2011, will allow the airline to pass on to passengers the costs the company gets charged in connection with credit card transactions.
Customers will continue to have a choice of payment formats to choose from for which no charge applies, such as Maestro card, Postcard or in cash.
A spokesman said: "With this restructuring, SWISS is keeping abreast of a general trend in the airline industry.
A number of airlines and tour operators already administer a charge for payments made by credit card.
