On the vast track

It is not until I stand beneath a glacier thousands of years old, or beside a lake the colour of crushed green gemstone, that the spirit of Canada's mountain country takes on a piercing reality.

I'm in the Rocky Mountains, exploring by road and rail. This morning I'm standing on the platform at Jasper. A green-roofed building houses a shop and cafe with outdoor tables beneath a sign that reads Trains & Lattes. Two hundred years ago you might have found fur traders here but no train. Snow peaks encircle us and 3956m Mt Robson, the highest summit in the range, is just to the northwest.

Geographically midpoint on my Insight Vacations' Grand Canadian Rockies tour, Jasper is where we turn on our heels and head back to Vancouver, our starting point 11 days ago.

We've stayed en route at Whistler, Kelowna, Banff, Field and Jasper, exploring on foot and by boat in inclusions and add-on tours. A two-day Rocky Mountaineer journey is our final leg.

Soon after setting out, I began thinking of this as the Insight Passage. Our guide, Andrea Dionne (Happy Feather), French-Canadian with First Nations heritage, is quirky and funny and can tell us everything we want to know and more.

Via Vancouver and Vancouver Island -- past flower-strewn pasturelands, barns with roofs that resemble overturned boat hulls and First Nations settlements; past Squamish, Sicamous, Owl Head and Kicking Horse River -- we've come face to face with the sublime peaks.

As we have climbed from sea level, the drama of the landscape has gathered momentum daily. Lakes have become icy-green, and glaciers, at first like distant clouds wedged between mountains, are now so close we've walked on one. In Jasper National Park, the Rockies' largest, we've cruised on Maligne Lake beneath high ice fields and forested slopes to Spirit Island.

Along the Icefields Parkway, more rustic country road than slick motorway -- where signs read "Bear alert", "Do not get out of your car", "All bears are dangerous" and "You are in avalanche country" -- we've ventured on to the Columbia Icefield in a cumbersome tank-like ice explorer.

Walking on the toe of the Athabasca Glacier -- 6km long, 1km wide, 300m deep -- we've tasted a handful of pure melt water laced with diamond shards of ice. On a Mt Edith Cavell walking trail, the ethereal Angel Glacier, like the Winged Victory of Samothrace, stretched its monumental, feathery wings above us. Postcard prettiness has become three-dimensional in environments rich in ancient geology, forest and animal lore.
