Clinton falls to Brooklawn in New Jersey Legion baseball playoffs
After a brilliant 19-1 regular season, the Pyramid Senior American Legion champion Clinton Knights came to Moody Park hoping to continue their winning ways in the Southern District playoffs Tuesday afternoon. The outlook looked sunny after Andrew Westlin , batting with an open stance, led off the second with an opposite-field homer over the 330-foot sign to give Clinton a 1-0 lead.
However, after a raging 11-run fifth-inning tsunami by the 24-time state champion Brooklawn Bulldogs keyed a seven-inning mercy rule shortened 18-4 defeat, the Knights went home feeling the Moody blues.
Now having to win to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament, the Knights return to Moody Park for a 4 p.m. game Thursday in the losers' bracket.
All nine starting players for Brooklawn scored at least one run and all but one got at least one hit and one run batted in.
With the temperature in the mid-90s, Clinton starter Sean Keselica was lifted after four innings with the Knights trailing 6-1. Only one of the six Brooklawn hits off of him was hit hard.
He issued six free passes via three walks and three hit batters, three of whom came around to score.
With two outs, Brooklawn got run-producing singles from Cody Brown and Elliott McCummings to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth. McCummings then was picked off first base, but managed to keep a rundown going long enough to enable Brown to score Brooklawn's fourth run. Brooklawn struck with two outs again for two fourth-inning runs thanks to a walk, double and single.
Casey Conroy (8-0) has pitched brilliantly for Clinton this season, but on Tuesday he relieved Keselica in the fifth and was charged with 10 runs on seven hits in an inning that also included a 21-minute delay for lightning and rain. Ryan Hawke took over on the mound for Conroy with the bases loaded and the first batter he faced, Brett Tenuto, lifted a grand slam to right center, making the score 17-1.
Hawke settled down and got the final two outs of the brutal inning and allowed one more run in mopping up.
