As you may have heard in the news, Epsilon (a major data management company) recently had a computer breach that allowed hackers to access their clients’ information. Epsilon’s clients include: Citibank, Chase, Capital One, American Express, Walgreens, Target, Tivo, and more. If you’re a customer of one of these companies, there’s a good chance you’ll be receiving an email notifying you that your information has been compromised and explaining what you should do to protect yourself.
The Cost of a Data Breach:
The cost of a data breach can be extensive. A recent study from the Ponemon Institute found that the average cost of a data breach is $214 per compromised record. Using that figure, a breach that compromises 500 records can cost an organization over $100,000.
Financial damages from a data breach can include lawsuits, reputation damage, loss of clientele and more. In many states, it is required by law that companies inform their clients if a data breach is even suspected, and that alone can be costly.
Protecting Yourself from a Cyber Loss:
From an insurance perspective, there are numerous questions that arise from this situation. It is crucial that you ask yourself the following questions: Do I have this exposure? How do I inform my clients if I have a data breach? What do I do if my clients sue me? How do I protect my system further? Does my normal insurance cover me for this?
All of these are great questions and should be discussed in detail with your insurance broker. There are products out there that address the risks associated with our increasingly cyber based lives.
